Experience a Leavenworth 4th of July

By Jessie Swider, Reservations

What do you think of when you think of the Fourth of July? Maybe it’s a BBQ with friends and family, fireworks lighting up the night sky? Or perhaps it’s Bill Pullman’s rousing patriotic speech on the verge of mankind’s showdown with alien invaders in the iconic 1996 movie Independence Day. However you choose to celebrate the biggest holiday of the summer, Leavenworth has something to offer.

Get Outside!

July in Leavenworth promises warm temperatures and sunny days, so it’s the ideal time to get outside. Cool off during the day by kayaking, paddle-boarding, swimming or wading at Lake Wenatchee State Park. Alternatively, tubing the Wenatchee River is always a family favorite and there are local companies who can arrange a shuttle and tube rentals. If our glacier-fed lakes and streams are a bit too chilly, head for the hills! There is no shortage of alpine hiking trails that take you up to the cooler elevations.

Fireworks

4th of July in Leavenworth is a little different from celebrations in other parts of the state. Due to the high risk of forest fire in Eastern Washington, personal fireworks are banned in all of Chelan County. However, that makes it the perfect destination for folks hoping to avoid them. So if you have a nervous dog or sound-sensitive family, this is a great spot to get away from those louder celebrations. For firework lovers, fear not, there is a professional firework display down the road in Wenatchee where you can watch the rockets’ red glare over the calm waters of the Columbia River. Be sure to bring your chairs and a blanket. It gets chilly down there!

Events in Town

Don’t forget about downtown! Leavenworth may be “little Bavaria” but we still celebrate the 4th of July. Start the day at Lions Club Park with the annual Ponderosa 4-H Breakfast. You can’t do better than an all-you-can eat breakfast for a great price that supports a local institution. Later in the day, swing by Icicle Village Resort for their 4th of July Palooza. Fun, games, and prizes await! Meanwhile, on Front Street you can enjoy live music or stroll Art in the Park—the longest running open-air art installment in Washington state!
